Spy shots of the 2023 BMW X1: the compact crossover has received an attractive design

The BMW X1 is already one of the better-looking choices in the compact crossover segment, and designers appear to be upping the wow factor in the next-generation model.

A fresh prototype of the redesigned X1 has been spotted, revealing some of the new styling themes. Judging by the makeshift lights and interior elements, this tester is still in a relatively early stage. This means that it will not hit showrooms until late 2022 at the earliest.

Even at this stage of development, we can already confirm that the redesigned X1 will look bolder and more brutal than the current model, thanks to the wide shark nose grille. The rest of the design will likely be an evolution of the current model, but the distinctive Hofmeister kink will be more vertical, further accentuating the toughness of the design.

The platform is the latest front-wheel drive architecture designed for BMW Group compact cars, known as FAAR. The platform debuted in the redesigned 1 Series hatchback sold abroad in 2019 and later appeared in the 2 Series Gran Coupe launched in 2020.

The FAAR platform is an update of the UKL platform that underpins the current X1. The biggest change is the battery-electric powertrain option. Yes, an electric X1 is planned that will most likely be badged iX1. It is one of at least 13 battery-electric models that the BMW Group will offer across its brands by the end of 2023.

Other powertrain options should be carried over from the current X1, meaning a series of 1.5-liter inline-3 and 2.0-liter inline-4 engines, all turbocharged. Mild hybrid technology will likely become standard equipment, and a plug-in hybrid setup utilizing the 1.5-liter engine will likely be offered again. The current plug-in hybrid X1 is not available, but a next-generation version may be available locally.

The standard drive system is front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive also available. The transmission will most likely be an 8-speed automatic only.

Don't expect an X1 M from BMW M, but something like the 302 hp X2 M35i is possible. It would be a great alternative to Mercedes-Benz AMG's new GLA35 and GLB35.

Stay tuned for updates as development progresses.
