2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 53 Spy Shot: the new performance crossover is here.

Mercedes-Benz is working on a redesign of its small crossover GLC-Class, which will once again offer a high-performance version developed by Mercedes-Benz AMG.

We have already spotted a prototype of the upcoming GLC 63, and today we have our first look at a prototype of the upcoming GLC 43.

The GLC-Class appears to be growing slightly for the next generation, adding a bit more room to the recently launched GLB-Class as well as additional interior space. It will be based on an updated version of Mercedes' MHA (Modular High Architecture) platform that underpins the current GLC-Class and will debut next year as a 2023 model.

This GLC 53 should arrive at about the same time as the regular crossover, but the GLC 63 range-topper may arrive six months to a year later.

We know this prototype is for the GLC 53 because of the four round exhaust tips in the rear; the GLC 63 prototype had square exhaust tips, a characteristic design of AMG's top models.

Both the GLC 53 and GLC 63 are expected to use turbocharged four-cylinder engines. Yes, get ready to say goodbye to the V-8 in the GLC 63.

The GLC 53 should be powered by AMG's 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 found in the tuner's compact range. Currently producing 416 hp, which is more than the current GLC 43's 385 hp, the GLC 53's mild hybrid system should provide an additional, albeit temporary, power boost.

As for the GLC 63, this model should feature a sophisticated plug-in hybrid powertrain that relies on the same mild hybrid setup as the GLC 53, but with the addition of an electric motor at the rear axle, which would add up to 201 hp, bringing total output to about 643 ps. This new setup, branded as the new E Performance, has already been previewed by AMG and will soon debut in the redesigned C 63.
