Spy shots and video of the 2023 Genesis G90: work is underway to update the flagship sedan

The Genesis G90 has been spotted getting a makeover.

The new flagship sedan is expected to debut late this year or early next year as a 2023 model and should bring a new platform and possibly a battery-electric option.

The current G90 was just updated a year ago, but the history of this handsome full-size sedan actually goes back to a model launched in Korea in 2015.

The prototype of the new G90 is heavily camouflaged, but the split headlight design and some of the Genesis-branded crest grille are visible. The greenhouse shape is also clearly visible and differs significantly from the current G90 design, with the sides split into five individual windows instead of the current model's three. A similar design can be seen on the Lexus LS.

The platform should be a stretched version of the Genesis-specific M3 architecture that debuted on the GV80 midsize crossover in 2021 and has since migrated to the G80 midsize sedan and GV70 small crossover. This rear-wheel-drive platform could accommodate all-wheel drive as well as a battery-electric powertrain as seen in the new electrified G80. Trademark filings indicate that Genesis is at least considering the possibility of an electric G90.

It is not clear if a V-8 will still be offered after the redesigned G90 arrives; it will likely be powered by the 375 hp 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine found in the GV80 and G80. A plug-in hybrid option boasting even more power is also a possibility. Even if a pure electric version does appear, it will likely not be available at launch.

The interior will feature a digital dash with an instrument cluster and infotainment hub consisting of two screens. The current standard is the high-tech design found in the redesigned Mercedes-Benz S-Class for 2021.

The current 2022 G90 starts at $74,995, including the $1,045 destination charge, but given the pricing increases seen in other recent Genesis redesigns, expect a slight premium on that figure for the new G90. Stay tuned.
