Spy shots of the 2022 Jeep Commander: a three-row Compass in development for the global market.

Jeep has a three-row, seven-passenger version of the Compass that was launched in Brazil last August under the name Commander.

Initially, it was thought that this compact family hauler would be limited to South America, but the latest spy shots show a right-hand drive prototype, suggesting that it may be offered in the global market.

The Commander is based on the updated Compass, which was launched in the US last summer as a 2022 model. If it were to be sold here, it would appear as a 2023 model.

It could also be renamed something like the Compass L if sold here, just as the three-row version of the Grand Cherokee is called the Grand Cherokee L. This is another compact three-row crossover, but related to the Cherokee.

Compared to the Compass, the Commander has a 6.2" longer wheelbase and is 14.4" longer overall. The result is more interior space, approximately 8.2 cubic feet with all seven seats in use and just over 62 cubic feet with the last two rows folded down.

For families seeking maximum space, Jeep sells a full-size SUV, the Wagoneer. A stretched version of this behemoth is also in the planning stages.
