Spy shots of the 2023 Audi A6: easy changes for a mid-cycle refresh.

Though it doesn't get much attention, Audi's A6 is one of the most handsome models in the midsize sedan segment.

That A6 is now getting an update, but fortunately, it doesn't look like designers are tinkering with the car's styling.

The current A6 was introduced in 2018 as a 2019 model. An updated version is expected to arrive late this year or early next year as a 2023 model. Its arrival would precede the arrival of the new A6 E-Tron, which Audi teased at the 2021 Shanghai Motor Show in the form of a concept model. The electric A6 is expected to arrive in 2023.

Spy shots of a prototype of an updated version of the regular A6 show a new interior for the lights at both ends, as well as a new mesh pattern for the grille and front intakes. The rear mask also features a new design.

Similar tweaks should feature in updated versions of other members of the A6 family, including the Avant and allroad wagon, the S6 and RS 6 performance duo.

It is not clear what updates Audi plans for the A6's cabin and powertrain. An updated infotainment system and some powertrain performance improvements are both likely. The U.S. may also finally see the introduction of a plug-in hybrid option for the A6 that is offered overseas.

Currently, the base powertrain in the U.S. is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 with 248 hp. Above that is a 3.0-liter V-6 turbo with 335 hp. Further above that is the S6 with a turbocharged 2.9-liter V-6 with 444 hp, and at the top of the range is the Avant wagon-only RS 6 with a turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 with 591 hp. Interestingly, we are told that the upcoming A6 E-Tron will also have a performance flagship, the RS 6 E-Tron.

The A6's plug-in hybrid option, available only overseas as noted above, combines a 2.0-liter turbo four with an electric motor for a total of 367 hp.

Updates will be released as development progresses.
