Spy shots of the 2024 Porsche 911 Hybrid: the electrified sports car is here.

Porsche was spotted testing what appears to be an electrified version of the 911 Carrera currently in development.

Porsche has been testing a prototype of an electrified version of the 911 Turbo for almost a year now, but this is the first time we have seen a prototype of an electrified version of the base Carrera. The Nürburgring, where this prototype was photographed, is a mandatory testing site for electrified vehicles.

Porsche CEO Oliver Blume admitted last week that an electric 911 is on the way. According to him, it is a hybrid along the lines of the former 919 Hybrid LMP1 racing car, not a plug-in hybrid like the hypercar 918 Spyder. In other words, there is no plug, and the electric motor-generator is used purely to support the internal combustion engine and to recover energy during braking.

This is also what veteran Porsche engineer August Achleitner, whose swan song at Porsche was the current 992-generation 911, told Motor Authority in a 2019 interview.

"We spent a lot of money to enter LMP1, but we also learned a lot." Now I think we are a step ahead of our other competitors and we want to use that."

The first members of the updated 911 series, known internally as the 992.2 generation, should begin appearing in 2023. An electrified 911 will likely be the new member, possibly labeled the Carrera S E-Hybrid, or the Carrera 4S E-Hybrid if an electric motor is used to power the front wheels.

Interestingly, there are rumors that the updated Carrera will feature a new naturally aspirated engine in place of the current turbocharged unit. This is somewhat corroborated by the new air vents in the rear mask of the prototype, a typical sign that a 911 prototype is testing a new engine.

What about the electrification of the 911 Turbo? The jury is still out on whether this model will also be a regular hybrid or go the plug-in hybrid route.

Porsche is heavily committed to electrification, aiming to have 80% of its sales volume be electric by 2030. The remaining 20% will be hybrids, with the 911, Porsche's last internal combustion engine vehicle, accounting for the majority.
