2023 BMW X5 M Spy Shot: a mid-cycle update is planned.

BMW was spotted testing an updated X5 M prototype at the Nürburgring.

The update is a mid-cycle refresh and should be introduced at the end of this year or early next year, along with similar updates to the regular X5 series. The related X6 and X6 M models will also receive the update.

As far as the prototypes are concerned, the tweaks to the exterior will be mild. Look for new grille changes, new front and rear fascias, along with new internals for the lights. The interior will also likely feature some updates, including a more advanced infotainment system with a larger screen, perhaps similar to that found on the iX electric crossover.

It is not clear what is planned for the powertrain. The current X5 M is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 that produces 600 hp in the standard model and 617 hp in the spicier X5 M Competition.

BMW is known to have developed a new V-8 engine, which may be used in the updated X5 M. Codenamed S68, the engine will be installed in the XM SUV later this year and will be paired with an electric motor in a plug-in hybrid configuration. The Concept XM used this configuration and boasted a maximum output of 750 hp.

The rest of the mechanical package should remain unchanged, meaning an 8-speed automatic and rear-bias all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive system sends power to the rear wheels until traction is needed, after which a multi-plate clutch is activated to send power to the front axle. However, there is no driver-selectable rear-wheel drive mode, as in the M5.

Production of the X5, including the X5 M, will take place at the BMW Group plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and will be sold worldwide.

Stay tuned for updates as development progresses.
