Spy shots and video of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz G-Class: first updates on the second-generation SUV icon.

The original Mercedes-Benz G-Class existed for 40 years and underwent numerous updates to keep it fresh. It is not certain how long Mercedes intends to let the car sleep before redesigning the current G-Class, but it seems certain that it will at least be regularly updated in a similar fashion to its predecessor.

In recent months, a camouflaged prototype of the updated G-Class has been spotted testing the car. The front and rear fascia changes can be seen, and the covered dashboard suggests that some changes have been made inside as well. The addition of the Mercedes MBUX infotainment system, which is available in all current Mercedes cars except the G-Class, should be a significant internal update.

It is not clear what changes, if any, are planned under the hood The G-Class is currently sold in the U.S. in G550 and AMG G63 grades, both powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8. The G550 has a mild hybrid system and the G63 may add some electrification, such as a plug-in hybrid system. An updated G63 prototype is also being tested.

A mild hybrid system will likely be the first to appear. This system, already used in other Mercedes models with the 4.0-liter V-8 engine, features an electric motor that can temporarily boost power by 21 hp and 184 lb-ft. A battery-electric powertrain will also be available in the G-Class, but it will not appear until 2024.

The second-generation G-Class was introduced in 2018 as a 2019 model. An updated version is currently expected to arrive later this year as a 2023 model. Mercedes is also testing a high-riding 4x4 squared option for the second-generation G-Class.

Stay tuned for updates as development progresses.
