Will the Ferrari 296 GTB become a convertible on April 19?

Ferrari posted a teaser shot of what appears to be a new 296 GTB supercar on social media on Wednesday, saying it has a surprise for April 19.

The teaser shows the car's beltline and the top of the rear fenders, but the roof is clearly missing, suggesting that we are looking at plans for a convertible version that could be called the 296 GTS or even the 296 Spider.

A prototype of a convertible version of the 296 GTB was recently spotted near Ferrari's Maranello headquarters and appeared to have a retractable hardtop roof similar to those used on other convertible Ferraris.

But aside from the new roof, the convertible version of the 296 GTB should be little different from its fixed-roof counterpart; the 296 GTB is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 and a plug-in electric motor sandwiched between the engine and an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Recall that the 296 GTB is a plug-in hybrid with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 and an electric motor between the engine and an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Maximum output is 818 hp, 0-62 mph acceleration is 2.9 seconds, top speed exceeds 205 mph, and a 7.45-kilowatt-hour battery allows for a modest electric range.

Ferrari is also testing a GT3-spec 296 GTB racing car, which is expected to enter the 2023 motorsport season.

Stay tuned for more Ferrari surprises to be announced next week.
