2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class Shooting Break Spy Shots: Updated Compact Wagon Spotted

Mercedes-Benz is updating its entire compact range, and a prototype of the CLA-Class Shooting Break has been spotted for sale overseas.

This follows the prototype of an updated version of the CLA-Class sedan, which was spotted in August. Prototypes of updated versions of the A-Class sedan, A-Class hatchback, B-Class, GLA-Class, and GLB-Class are also being tested.

Note that the improved A-Class will not be launched in the US. The current compact sedan will be discontinued in the U.S. after the 2022 model year, and the GLA-Class will become the brand's entry model in the market.

The current second-generation CLA-Class should arrive in 2019 as a 2020 model, and in keeping with Mercedes tradition, the updated version should arrive in 2023 as a 2024 model.

The prototype is only lightly camouflaged, which makes sense for an update. The grille has been modified, the front and rear fascias have been changed, and the internals of the lights at both ends appear to have been adjusted.

Expected interior changes include a new center console design and new graphics for the digital meter cluster and infotainment hub.

It is not clear what is planned for the powertrains, but more power may be added, especially for the AMG CLA 35 and CLA 45. the CLA class is currently offered in the U.S. with a 2.0-liter turbo four engine, with the CLA 250 grade offering 250 hp, 302 hp in the CLA 35, and 382 hp in the CLA 45. In other markets, there is also a CLA 45 S grade that delivers 416 hp.

Front-wheel drive is standard on the CLA 250, while all-wheel drive is standard on the other grades.

Mercedes sold only 6,822 CLA-Class units in the U.S. in 2021, and despite the CLA-Class not selling very well, it is expected to survive when Mercedes redesigns its compact range around mid-decade. The same cannot be said for the A- and B-Classes, which are expected to be discontinued as Mercedes focuses on smaller volume, more profitable vehicles.
