2025 Maserati GranCabrio Folgore debuts with electric Grand Touring

Maserati GranCabrio GranTurismo gets a sibling and beats out the competition in the electric convertible market in the process.

On Monday, the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore debuted with electric powertrains, stunning good looks, and a soft top. When it arrives in the U.S. in the fourth quarter, it will cost more than $200,000.

The GranCabrio Folgore looks like the top of the GranTurismo Folgore cut off. The design changes from the previous model are subtle, as is the GranTurismo. The GranCabrio Folgore features the same long hood, short rear deck, and bulging fenders as the coupe. Like the coupe, it has a low ride height and 20-inch front and 21-inch staggered wheels at the rear. The slim, oval grille updates the brand's front-end treatment, and the Trident badge sits large and proud.

The Gran Cabrio's soft top can be opened in 14 seconds while driving up to 31 mph. It can be closed in 16 seconds with a button on the center console. All can also be operated with gesture controls by swiping and holding the touchscreen to the left or right. The trunk holds 5.3 cubic feet of cargo with the top closed and 4.0 cubic feet with the top down.

Thanks to the standard neck warmers, occupants can stay warm or cool while driving with the top down. The airflow is adjustable, with three speed settings. A wind blocker that restricts airflow in the cabin is also available as an option.

The interior is digitized, combining a 12.2-inch digital meter cluster with a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, with climate controls above an 8.8-inch screen. Knurled trim pieces and a clock are placed on the dash top and are housed in the leather upholstered interior.

Maserati uses an electric motor developed for Formula E and a silicon carbide inverter. The Gran Cabrio Folgore is equipped with three electric motors, one at the front and two at the rear, each rated at 300 kw (402 hp). The total output is said to exceed 1,200 hp, but is actually limited to 760 hp due to the inverter.

The motor is powered by a 92.5 kwh (usable 83.0 kwh) T-type battery, which is housed behind the driveline tunnel and rear seat. It all runs on 800-volt electric architecture and can charge the battery to 20-80% in 18 minutes; EPA ratings are unconfirmed, but Maserati estimates the range to be about 250 miles. Weight distribution is 50:50.

The braking system can regenerate energy at up to 0.65 g, but does not offer a one-pedal driving mode.

Top speed is from 199 mph, the top speed of the GranTurismo's Forgore coupe sibling, Checks in at 180 mph, with a 0-62 mph time of 2.8 seconds, slightly slower than the coupe's 2.7 seconds. Four drive modes are available: Max Range, GT, Sport, and Corsa. In Corsa, rear-end torque vectoring can be set separately from the traction control level. It is all digital, as there is no mechanical connection.

Since there is no gas engine under the hood, Maserati synthesizes sound from the inverter and electric motor and amplifies it in the cabin.
