Bentley Flying Spur Speed, 771-horsepower V-8 hybrid engine.

Bentley announced Thursday that the Flying Spur will feature a new V-8 plug-in hybrid powertrain called the Ultra Performance Hybrid Powertrain.

According to Bentley, this hybrid powertrain will be available in the updated Flying Spur Speed. The company has not disclosed a time frame, but the debut is expected later this year.

The hybrid powertrain debuted in the updated Continental GT Speed in June. The powertrain replaces Bentley's venerable 6.0-liter W-12 twin-turbo, which will end production this summer, ending a 20-year run Bentley has introduced a coachbuilt Batur and Batur Convertible to mark the end of W-12 production

The Batur is a hybrid.

The output of the hybrid powertrain was confirmed to be 771 hp with the modified Flying Spur Speed. This new output is 145 hp higher than the output generated by the current Flying Spur Speed from the W-12.

The hybrid powertrain is a combination of a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 and one electric motor. The electric motor is integrated with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and directs drive torque to the four wheels via an all-wheel drive system.

The current Flying Spur was launched in the U.S. in the 2020 model year and gains its first hybrid powertrain in 2022. The existing hybrid powertrain focuses more on economy than performance, with a turbocharged 2.9-liter V-6 engine and a single electric motor for a total output of 536 hp.

The Flying Spur also features a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine. In May, Continental introduced a special edition Edition 8 of the Continental GT, Continental GTC, and Flying Spur with only a V-8 engine.

According to teaser photos released with Thursday's announcement, the updated Flying Spur Speed will feature the same split-headlight design as the current model, although the front mask will change.
