Netflix Miniseries “Senna” Debuts November 29

A new series for racing fans will soon be coming to Netflix.

The popular streaming service announced last week that “Senna,” a miniseries about the life of legendary Brazilian Formula One driver Ayrton Senna on and off the race track, will air on November 29.

The series, for which a trailer was released on May 1, has six episodes and marks the 30th anniversary of Senna's death in a crash at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix behind the wheel of a Williams. The race is one of the most tragic in modern motorsports history, as Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger, driving a Simtek, was also killed during qualifying.

The semi-fictional series begins early in the triple world champion's international racing career, when he moved to England to compete in Formula Ford, and continues through the fateful 1994 race in Imola, Italy.

Netflix produced the series with the Brazilian production company Gullane. Brazilian actor Gabriel Leone stars and Brazilian directors Vicente Amorim and Julia Rezende direct.

The cast includes Matt Mella as Alain Prost, who had a tumultuous rivalry with Senna, Johannes Heinrichs as Niki Lauda, Patrick Kennedy as Ron Dennis, Leon Ockenden as James Hunt, Frank Williams Stephen McIntosh, and Alice Wegman as Lillian Vasconcelos, Cena's first wife.

Senna died at the young age of 34, having won 161 races and 41 victories in his 10-year Formula One career, winning drivers' championships in 1988, 1990, and 1991.

A fictional F1 movie starring Brad Pitt is also being developed by Apple for a mid-2025 release, and F1 itself is rumored to be involved in the production of a “family drama series” starring Felicity Jones.
