Porsche engineers were spotted testing a new variant of the Cayenne Coupe.

The Cayenne Coupe is, as the name suggests, a coupe-like version of the Cayenne designed to challenge the upscale versions of the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe; it will be introduced in 2020 and is currently available in base, S and Turbo variants.

The new variant is expected to be the Cayenne GTS Coupe, positioned between the S and Turbo, and is expected to arrive next year as a 2022 model.

The Cayenne GTS coupe will be available in S and Turbo variants, and should appear next year as a 2022 model.

The GTS model is aimed at buyers who want something sportier than the S, but are not yet ready to upgrade to a "hardcore" variant like the Turbo. Previous generations of the Cayenne have offered a GTS variant, but we haven't seen it yet in the current third generation.

What is clearly visible in the spy shots of the prototype is the new exhaust pipe located in the center of the rear end. Engineers tried to hide it by installing a blind block in the place where the Cayenne Coupe's exhaust pipe is usually located. A similar design is often found in the GTS versions of Porsche's 718 and 911 sports cars.

The prototype also features larger brake rotors and a front mask similar to that used on the Cayenne Turbo Coupe.

It is unclear what powertrain the prototype is equipped with. The most likely option is an upgraded version of the 2.9-liter V6 turbo installed on the Cayenne S coupe. Its output is 434 hp, but this GTS variant should have around 470 hp to fill the 541-hp turbo engine power gap.

Interestingly, there are rumors that Porsche will develop a more hardcore Cayenne coupe along the lines of the 718 Cayman GT4 and 911 GT3. It's also possible that it will carry the GT5 badge, which Porsche has filed a trademark for. While none of these variants have been unveiled yet, we can probably expect to see a variant with the 670-horsepower powertrain from the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid.

Stay tuned for updates as development progresses.
