The Porsche Track Precision app extends the functionality of the virtual driving coach.

If you can't afford a driving coach, Porsche's Track Precision app can help you improve your driving through data analysis. Porsche announced in a press release Thursday that the latest version of this free app can now be viewed on the car's infotainment screen.

The app previously worked only with smartphones, but version 3.2 can be projected to Porsche's Porsche Communication Management infotainment system via Apple CarPlay, allowing drivers to read data traces The driver no longer needs to squint at the smartphone screen to read the data trace.

Porsche has also added 100 pre-programmed race tracks, bringing the total number of tracks available in the app to over 300. Drivers can also record their own track videos and data. [Porsche brand ambassador and racing driver Jorg Bergmeister said in a statement, "With the Porsche Track Precision App, sports car drivers can improve their performance on the track, while at the same time success can also be recorded and plotted."

Launched in 2015, the app records video and data such as speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, braking force, engine RPM, etc. It can also record lap times using GPS data. Information from one lap can be compared to another to indicate possible improvements. [The app works with the Apple ecosystem, so drivers can export data to their iPad using AirDrop or start and stop recording using their Apple Watch. The watch can also monitor the driver's pulse and vibrate when the driver sets a personal best.

The Porsche Track Precision app was initially only available as part of the Sport Chrono package for GT models, but is now available for all current 911 and 718 Boxster/Cayman models.
