A spy shot of the 2022 Honda Civic Type R

Honda engineers are out testing the next generation Civic Type R. The current model is one of our Motor Authority favorites, so the engineers have a solid base from which to prepare a redesigned model.

The current Civic came out for the 2016 model year, bringing a new platform that will be upgraded for the new Civic, which will be unveiled next year as the 2022 model. Given the advanced stage of this Civic Type R prototype, this fiery hot hatch should appear with the regular model.

The proportions of the new Civic Type R appear similar to the current model, but the wedge-like shape of the current car seems to have a smoother appearance on the new model. The rear wing is also smaller, giving it a more mature look.

The lights are new at both ends, and there appears to be an opening in the center of the rear fascia for an exhaust tip, similar to the current car. The single exhaust tip seen on this prototype is only a temporary unit.

Let's take a look at the interior as well. The steering wheel and dashboard are both new, and the designers opted for a separate screen mounted above the center stack rather than an integrated one like the current model.

It is not clear what mechanical improvements are planned, but under the hood of this prototype will be the current 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4, presumably topping the current 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The new Civic Type R will likely come standard with a six-speed manual and front-wheel drive, and may be electrified in some form.

Again, it is expected to be offered only in the Civic hatchback body style. Production of the Civic hatch will be moved from its current location in the UK to North America, so the next Civic Type R will almost certainly be sourced locally. The move is scheduled for 2021.

Stay tuned for updates as development progresses.
