Morgan builds three-wheeled electric cars before production begins.

Morgan's EV3 three-wheeled electric car will no longer be produced, Jonathan Wells, lead designer for the British sports car company, told Autoblog in an interview published Monday.

He didn't say why the EV3 was canceled, but there have been reports of powertrain supply issues from the same British company, Frazer-Nash, in 2018.

The good news is that, judging by some comments Wells made in an interview with Autoblog, Morgan doesn't seem to have given up on its EV ambitions.

"We've learned a lot from the EV3 program, and this serves as a breeding ground for future generations and ongoing projects. We look to the future and intend to be ready for it when it comes."

The EV3 is based on a gasoline-powered three-wheeled vehicle that Morgan began producing in 2012; it was first unveiled at the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show, but the company had trouble securing a powertrain shortly thereafter. Fraser Nash had intended to introduce the EV3 to the world in late 2017, but this is now unlikely to happen.

The last powertrain configuration announced by Morgan for the EV3 was a 56 hp electric motor powered by a 21 kWh lithium-ion battery. This may not seem like much, but the total mass of the EV3 was only 1,100 pounds.

For those frustrated by the lack of three-wheeled electric vehicles, today's Edison 2 model from American company Vanderhall is available for $34,950. In this model, a pair of motors develops 140 hp and is powered by a 28 kWh battery. Vanderhall claims that this three-wheeled electric vehicle has a range of up to 200 miles (40 km).
